don’t diy

I think I’m going to pitch a show to TLC or the DIY Network called Don’t DIY. The show will be about which home repair projects you should not attempt to do yourself if you lack the skills as I do, what it will cost you to have someone else do the repairs and clean-up for you after the job goes horribly wrong, and tips on how to fix small mistakes like paint dripping onto the carpet. An episode might go something like this:

“Hi, I’m Susan with Don’t DIY. Today we’re going to discuss what might happen if you try to repair drywall holes on your own.”

I just attempted to complete #71 on my 101 in 1001 list: sand and paint the unfinished wall in the office. Okay, it’s not really an unfinished wall, but when we had a ceiling fan installed a while ago (definitely NOT a DIY project!) they had to cut big holes in the wall to do the wiring. I used Home Depot for the job, and their contractors didn’t repair the holes that they created. They said that was someone else’s job?! But I figured it can’t be that hard, so I attempted it on my own.

First, I bought some of those drywall patch repair kits, you know the little metal squares on a mesh backing? I was able to successfully apply those to the holes. That was the easy part - you just peel the sticker back off of the mesh and place it on the wall. Technically at this point the hole was gone and I was feeling pretty pleased with myself! However, I then had to wield one of those spatula thingies to apply spackle (the name escapes me at the moment – is it just called spatula?). Well, I’m not a spackling expert, and I applied it a little too thick. Which meant I needed to sand it down. My friend, Sam, who is a home DIY expert warned me that sanding it would get dust everywhere and that I should wipe away the excess with a damp cloth or something. I can’t remember. So I have thus confirmed that information by ignoring her warning and sanding down the little mounds of spackle. Yes, everything in my office is covered with a fine sprinkling of white powder indeed. Lovely! Not to mention I can’t seem to get the wall smooth – there are nice little holes and lines all over that refuse to go smooth.

Then, in the process of painting over the spackle, I grew tired and frustrated and did a sloppy job of painting. I ended up flicking little spots paint all over the carpet. Note: This will be the comedic part of the episode, as my painting skills are definitely hilarious. I was using a paint brush to put paint onto a roller because I didn’t want to go through the hassle of using a tray and a liner. I’m currently working on getting the paint up by using Goo Gone. It seems to be sort of working.I think I’m probably going to have to hire someone to come out and get the wall done the way it should be finished. I don’t even want to attempt to finish the ceiling. If anyone local to me knows someone who does a great job with painting and repairing holes in drywall, please send me their contact info!

And then maybe I’ll close out the episode by saying something like, “Thanks for tuning in to Don’t DIY! I’m Susan, and remember…if you don’t DIY, you don’t have to worry about screwing up!” What do you think? Would you tune in? I also have an idea for a how-not-to-cook show. I might call it Making a Mess and Burning Things with Susan.

I could definitely be on those show! I burn pizza for gosh sake! Why didn’t you enlist the husband to help you with these things? Isn’t that what their good for? If not, I’m never getting married! ;)

JennAugust 28, 2008 - 10:02 am

Yeah some things are just easier to be left to contractors.. Kudos on trying to do it yourself though.

Jaci ClarkAugust 28, 2008 - 10:20 am

You should have enlisted my help. I’m good at these things and definitely would have made the trek to see you, my friend! :)
Sorry it’s gone all wrong. What about asking the friend who told you about the sanding to help? It’s worth a shot.

Cheers,
Jaci

I would totally be on the segment entitled ‘Don’t DIY Red Velvet Cupcakes.’ My kitchen looks like a crime scene that the culprit couldn’t quite get clean enough.

I agree w/Shelby, where’s hubby?

susanAugust 28, 2008 - 11:24 am

Oops, before it looks like I’ve thrown hubby under the bus for not being handy, he does do a lot of projects around the house. He takes on the plumbing and electrical tasks and does a fine job. I, being of a stubborn nature, take on projects that I *think* I’ll be good at…but it usually turns out I’m not. I can get paint on a wall fairly well, but I make a mess.

susanAugust 28, 2008 - 11:49 am

And Jaci I would loooooove to have you out to visit! I won’t even put you to work! :D

ArminAugust 31, 2008 - 11:37 am

Hey can you come fix up my place before we sell? lol I like some DIY, but not a lot =)

Eileen BroderickSeptember 3, 2008 - 8:38 pm

Ok–bummer–I totally commented from work today (and listed, like 5 movies for you to watch!) but they wouldn’t go through! I think it’s some security issue. Damn internet security!

Anyhoo–I would LOVE to watch that show! I really think you’re on to something! It’d be hilarious to start, and then the experts could rush in and teach us all how to fix it!

must-see movies?

So, I haven’t seen Forrest Gump. I know, that’s really weird. It’s not that I didn’t want to see it when it was out, and it’s not that I haven’t wanted to watch it since then, I just haven’t watched it yet! But whenever the movie comes up in conversation, like if someone quotes it and I have to admit that I haven’t seen it, I get the look like I just spontaneously sprouted a second head. Cast Away is another one of those movies. And I swear, I adore Tom Hanks as an actor! I’ve seen several of his other movies. It’s funny because I feel like I watch movies all the time, but I guess I just watch a lot of weird sleeper films (Chris would say I just watch a lot of bad movies). In an effort to catch up on the movies that I somehow missed and am crazy for not having seen them, I’m making a list of these must-see movies. In effort to make the list, I’d love to hear what your must-see movies are!

What movie would make you drop your jaw and do a double-take if you found out that someone hadn’t seen it? Leave me a comment and I’ll let you know if I’ve seen your must-see movie or not! If not, I’ll add it to my list and get to it immediately.

Grease I and II
Murel’s(sp) Wedding

Jaci ClarkAugust 27, 2008 - 11:41 am

Forrest Gump is a great movie but I wasn’t thrilled with Cast Away. You definitely need to see FG sometime, though. Bring some tissues.
I have so many favorites. Usual Suspects is one that I highly recommend. I met a gal last week who hadn’t seen The Matrix and I was stunned.

Cheers,
Jaci

susanAugust 27, 2008 - 12:20 pm

Jenn – Oh I just saw Muriel’s Wedding recently! Loved it. Of course I’ve seen Grease, but not the sequel. I’ll add Grease 2 to my list!
Jaci – Yay, I’ve seen The Matrix so I’m not going to stun you there. I haven’t seen The Usual Suspects though. Added!

JennAugust 27, 2008 - 4:53 pm

Oh one movie I know Stephen would be shocked you have not seen is Pride and Prejudice (Kiera Knightly) I am sure I just butchered her name. I agree with Jaci Usual Suspects is fantastic as is Silence of the lambs

susanAugust 27, 2008 - 5:12 pm

Ooo, nope. I haven’t seen Pride and Prejudice either. Added it! (I’ve actually seen Silence of the Lambs believe it or not…eep.)

Sarah HodzicAugust 27, 2008 - 5:20 pm

Dirty Dancing…. if you haven’t seen that, I just don’t know what I am gonna do with myself. :D
Also Tommy Boy… it’s a must!

susanAugust 27, 2008 - 6:34 pm

Dirty Dancing – Seen it! Dozens of times. (Whew, right?!)
Tommy Boy – Nope. I’ll add it!

Lynn PaszkiewiczAugust 28, 2008 - 11:33 am

The Princess Bride is a must-see! Also, Enchanted if you haven’t seen that yet. The Notebook. Top Gun. Seen any of those? I know what you mean though, so many movies I fully intend to see & then never get around to it!

susanAugust 28, 2008 - 2:29 pm

Lynn, The Princess Bride is one of my all-time favorite movies! I haven’t seen Enchanted or the Notebook though. They’re both in my Netflix queue. :)

ArminAugust 31, 2008 - 11:45 am

Am I the only guy that comments on your blog?? =) Okay some that come to mind—Mystic River, Usual Suspects, The Machinist, Man On Fire, The Professional, Scarface, Catch Me If You Can, Anchorman, The Incredibles, & Finding Nemo. Have fun!

Eileen BroderickSeptember 3, 2008 - 8:45 pm

Um…if you have not seen Breakfast Club, I will fall off of my chair. Saw The Usual Suspects years ago–loved it. Also worth checking out: Hurricane, Juno, Life Is Beautiful (Italian subtitles–yes!), Garden State (starts off weird but gets really good!), The Awakenings, In America, Cloverfield…Too many to list! Enjoy!

Sarah HodzicSeptember 10, 2008 - 11:08 pm

Garden State – one of my all time favorite movies.

party of five (+ rita)

Despite the toasty day we had today, I had a great time with this adorable family for some fun portraits! They were absolute troopers in the warm weather, and if I’m not mistaken I think all three kids actually really enjoyed having their pictures taken. After seeing their natural flare for “striking a pose” I’m pretty sure all three are destined for the spotlight in some way. It was hard to choose my favorite images (there are many!) but here are a few:

I adore how well they all got along. So sweet!

Big squeeze!

Hello gorgeous family!

I’m telling you – they were complete naturals in front of the camera. I didn’t prompt any of these!

And don’t forget Rita! She was just chillin’ in the shade.

I had a great time with all of you today! I hope you remember me when you all become superstars!
