  • I’m a Hero

So it turns out that I’m not too shabby at Guitar Hero on the Nintendo Wii. I beat the game on Easy, and now I’m at the last stage of Medium. Last night I played online against some girl named Jessica. I beat her in the first round, she beat me in the second round, and then I “conquered with authority” in the final battle. (See TV screenshot below.)

Chris said that she was probably 8 years old. Whatever, I won!

  • The New Site!

So, I think a lot of you know by now that the new www.susansolo.com site went live! I’m really excited about all of the feedback I’m getting – thank you so much for all of your amazing compliments!

I’m bummed that a handful of people are seeing the top of the site chopped off. I have a trouble ticket in to my host to see if they can help me fix the configuration, but I’m not exactly sure what causes the problem. If you are seeing the top cut off (like in the middle of the logo), let me know – it’ll be a huge help if I know what browser you’re using (Internet Explorer 6 or 7, Firefox, Opera, etc.) and if you really want to be helpful, the screen resolution. This information can be found by right-clicking on your desktop and going to Properties > Settings for you PC users. I’m not sure about Macs.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Happy New Year! (& Anika)

Happy 2008 everyone! The year ahead is just full of excitement, I can feel it!

I’m ringing in the new year by doing a few new things. One of my resolutions is to cook more, so last night I made fish, which I never do because I just don’t like fish at all. I made a baked tilapia though with just a few spices, and it was totally edible! I won’t seek it out on an everyday basis (maybe just once a month or so?), but it’s nice to know that I can prepare good-for-you fish in a way that is palatable. I’m also going to prepare things on the weekend that Chris and I can heat up and eat for dinner in the evenings (healthy casseroles, slow cooker meals, etc.). We have been eating out way too much, so hopefully having things on hand ready to go each weeknight will make it more convenient.

On another note, I think my blog is going to have a new look and feel very soon. So stay tuned for that.

That’s all for now! I’ll leave you with some photos I took of Anika last week:

  • Holiday Wrap-Up

Happy New Year’s Eve! Hope you all had a great holiday with your loved ones. I had a great Christmas with LOTS of loved ones! Chris and I spent the weekend before Christmas in Wintergreen with his brother, sister, sister’s boyfriend, Mark, his dad, Margie, Margie’s daughter, Sarah, and her husband, Tony, and Margie’s son, Chris. Then we spent Christmas Eve Day in Charlottesville with his mom, stepdad, aunt and uncle, grandmother and brother/sister/Mark again. THEN on Christmas we spent the day with my mom, dad, grandmother and my g-ma’s friend, Gloria.

    Whew!

It was a fun whirlwind holiday, but I’m glad to have low-key plans for tonight and tomorrow to just relax. Other than visiting with family, I’ve been working hard to finish up the new susansolo.com. I should be done in a day or two and will let you know when it has officially gone live. Stay tuned!

  • Priceless

In an attempt to recreate a family holiday tradition, last night I tried to bake and decorate sugar cookies. Chris and I are visiting his family all weekend, so I thought it would be nice to have something like that to take with us. Earlier in the week I bought all of the ingredients, some new Christmas-shaped cookie cutters, and fun tins to store the cookies. The baking part went alright I guess, despite the fact that I didn’t realize if you use a light cookie sheet, a dark cookie sheet, and a pizza stone each for a separate batch, all of the bake times are quite different. I ended up with a nice array of light golden brown, dark golden brown, and brown. After chucking the browns, I sat down with my acceptable golden browns and got ready to decorate. I set it up just like my mom used to – all of my bare cookies, frosting and decorations spread out on the dining table, my tasty canvas and artist’s tools. After frosting about five cookies, I realized that the fun of our family tradition was sitting around the table with my mom and brother and listening to my dad in the background watching football. The banter that we had, and the flow of artistic creativity (“Ooo, look at what I did!”) made the decorating go by much faster. At 11:30 pm with only 8 down and the rest of the 6 dozen sugar cookies to go, I decided that the sugar cookie decorating tradition is best left to fond memories. I was covered in flour, and getting whiney, and I might’ve even cursed at the cookies at some point. Thanks Mom, for always making it fun and easy!

Mixing the cookie dough: 10 minutes.
Rolling the dough and cutting cookie shapes: 20 minutes.
Memories of making holiday cookies with my family: a lifetime.

    Happy Holidays, everyone!
