Hey look! It’s Marty, also known as Martypants and sometimes Mr. Pants. He’s still pretty timid, but his mumbly little vocabulary is growing. He imitates us daily and his favorite thing to repeat is, “good boy!” He also makes a knock-knock-knock noise that makes me laugh. He will still only step up onto my hand while in the cage – he doesn’t seem to want to come out like all of my other birds did even though I’ve promised that we won’t eat him. He has been out several times and is getting to know the layout of our house, but he just seems to prefer his own little house right now. Hopefully he’ll eventually come out of the cage to play and explore on a more regular basis, but until then we’re enjoying his company (from behind bars) and we love listening to his cute mimicry.

Photo Friday – Long Bay Beach
Another week just went by where I didn’t pick up my camera even once. I blame all the studying! (I passed my two certification exams, but now I’m onto the next one which means more studying.) So on that note, I’m posting an image from Tortola because I’m dreaming of warmer weather and beachy scenes with little seagulls in the sand. And it’s worth noting that no Photoshop was used to boost the colors in this image. That was the real color of the water!

Photo Friday – Atop Pikes Peak
Well, I managed to take a total of zero photos this week. I spent all of my free time the past several days studying for a certification exam (that I’m taking today!), so I’m posting a old photo again. AND…it’s not even a photo I took. It’s a photo of me sitting at the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado circa 1980. I love that it sort of looks like I have something deep on my mind, like I’m contemplating the world from on top of the world. Maybe I was coming up with a list of all the places I’d love to see one day!

Photo Friday – Festive New Belgium
This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago during our visit to Colorado. It’s a string of lights found in the New Belgium Brewery, and they’re made from beer can tops! Clever and super festive, no?

2014 in Review
Happy 2015 everyone! I’m pretty sure at some point on this blog or perhaps in conversations elsewhere I’ve waxed poetic about how much I love the freshness of January 1st. I’m a total sucker for a flip of the calendar opening up a blank slate with endless possibilities. I’m definitely a dreamer so I love thinking about what’s ahead, but I also enjoy reminiscing about what I’ve just left behind.
My 2014 held so many wonderful moments. I had resolved to travel as much as possible and I think I accomplished that with trips to West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Grand Cayman, Colorado (twice), Florida, and Iceland. I crossed a bunch of things off my bucket list, including photographing the Northern Lights, going horseback riding, and while I haven’t done a dive in the ocean yet, Chris and I did take a scuba class and plan to continue our training soon. We welcomed sweet Marty into our family and were excited to learn that he is a pretty good little talker. He’s still learning, but I’m hoping to catch some of his chatter on video soon so I can share that with you! Over the summer I was really happy to reconnect with a friend with whom I had lost touch. And last but not least, I officially said goodbye to my photography business (but I did do a couple of portrait sessions for friends). Letting go of SSP allowed me to travel a bit more and enjoy lots of free weekends, so I’m completely certain that was the right decision!
Of course with the good comes the bad and while I make it a habit to look on the bright side as much as possible, I also like to keep it real. 2014 had a few lowlights like when Chris suffered from a bad case of food poisoning while we were in Grand Cayman. We also lost our beloved little bird, Charlie, early in the year. But we are incredibly grateful for the year’s highlights, and I’m excited to see what 2015 has in store for everyone! I’m especially looking forward to a few big trips that are on the books. Here’s to your own health and happiness in 2015!
