    Guest Bath Mini Makeover

Our main floor guest bathroom was definitely filed in the “rooms-in-serious-need-of-a-makeover” folder. Everything builder’s grade that can be put in a bathroom was in this room – the hardware, the faucet, the lighting, the floors, the cabinet, and so on. When we bought the house, I remember thinking, Ooo, it’s a blank canvas! We can do anything with it. And yes, it truly is a blank canvas. The only problem is, the entire house was a blank canvas, and we simply couldn’t tackle everything at once. Somehow, this sad little bathroom didn’t get a ton of attention until recently when I decided to give it a mini-makeover to tide us over until we can decide what we really want to do with it. So here’s the before:

Here’s the other side, though not much will change over there. (P.S. Sorry that the toilet lid was up! But you’re probably blinded by the other horrible features in here and maybe didn’t notice that lid.)02_guest_bath_blog

The first thing we decided to change was that light fixture. All of our research indicated that this would be a simple swap! Until we popped the fixture off and found this mess of a hole behind the mounting hardware. Unfortunately, the hole would not be covered up by the new fixture. We spent the day learning how to patch large drywall holes (short answer: make a bigger, square hole and fit a fresh piece of drywall of the same size in the new hole). Once the hole was repaired, sanded and painted, installing the new light fixture was easy breezy.03_guest_bath_blog

After swapping out the light fixture, we painted the walls a soft sage color (which doesn’t photograph well at all, by the way). I wanted to go with a light neutral since this room lacks a window and therefore doesn’t get any natural light. We installed a new towel bar, a shelf and I added a few accessories and art, but it still looked blah because of that vanity! It was just so…orange. And the faucet needed to be more fun. 04_guest_bath_blog 05_guest_bath_blog

The vanity and the vanity top were in good shape, so I decided to just paint the cabinet a grayish-green and add some simple knobs and a new toilet paper holder. I followed these directions for painting the cabinet. It was super easy, only took one weekend (due to the drying time), and I think it made a huge difference! The Sherwin-Williams paint color I used on the cabinet is called Chatroom.

I also painted the quarter-round to match the baseboards. I’m not sure why it was ever orange oak in the first place. I still need to find a new mirror, and we also plan to add crown molding. Eventually I think we’ll gut the whole thing and do some really nice upgrades, but for now, it’s so much better.06_guest_bath_blog

Oh and here’s the new faucet! It’s not the most expensive one by any means since this is just an in-the-meantime fix, but I think it’s more fun than what was in there before. 07_guest_bath_blog

Since this is my first bathroom makeover project I went with a really safe monochromatic palette, but I think my next in-the-meantime steps will be to find the perfect mirror and also add in some color with different accessories/art. Maybe something similar to one of these palettes – autumn hues, or bright punchy colors with the soft neutrals. 08_guest_bath_blog

Oh and I have another bathroom to tackle in the same way, so more on bathroom updates soon!

  • 2013 in Review

Happy New Year! *confetti* I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are enjoying a peaceful start to the new year. I’m so excited for what’s coming up in 2014, but I also love to look back on the year behind and reflect on the highlights:

Snowboarding at Snowshoe, WV · Completing my Invisalign treatment (official photo from the orthodontist’s office!) · Celebrating the birth of Coelle’s baby girl · Photographing a few lovely weddings and getting a photo published in the Washington Post · Taking a guitar class · Traveling to breathtaking Tortola and Virgin Gorda · Meeting up with Casey in Orlando, FL to visit Universal/The Wizarding World of Harry Potter · Seeing awesome concerts including The Killers and Depeche Mode · Starting my yoga practice · Traveling to Puerto Rico and hiking in El Yunque · Cheering on the Caps at several games · Working on house projects including a bathroom mini-makeover · Visiting my family in Colorado and skiing for the first time in 20 years!

    2013_highlights

Not pictured are the lowlights of 2013 – wouldn’t that be a weird collage? It would include minor snowboarding injuries, Chris’s broken hand from softball, and my jaw surgery where one side of my face puffed up to the size of a grapefruit. But I’d always rather focus on the positives!

Chris and I have some really amazing plans for 2014 including learning to scuba dive (eep!), traveling to West Virginia, Grand Cayman, Iceland, and Colorado, and some house projects to keep us busy in between trips. I can’t wait to share some photos, and to hear about your own adventures! Hope your year is happy, healthy, and everything else you want it to be. 🙂

  • Learning to Cook: Vegetable Summer Rolls

So, here it is – the end of 2013! That was fast, right?! How did you do on your resolutions? I’m going to give myself a B+. My one resolution for 2013 was to learn to cook. I created a really organized plan for myself, and while I started off strong, I sort of veered off-plan for the rest of the year. I did do a LOT more cooking this year than usual. I’m pretty sure I completed several of the “lessons” I assigned to myself, but I just didn’t track it and photograph my progress as often as I had intended. So, I’m going to leave my learn-to-cook plan open-ended, and just work on it and complete the list whenever I can.

Here’s one of the recipes I did remember to photograph! Vegetable Summer Rolls with Peanut Sauce. I order these every time I eat at Big Bowl in Reston. I crave them regularly, so I decided to try to replicate the recipe at home. I couldn’t find a recipe that sounded exactly like the Big Bowl summer rolls, so I combined about four different recipes to come as close as I could to theirs. I ended up making way too much peanut sauce (so if you make this recipe you might want to cut it in half), but I feel like it was pretty close in taste. And the recipe actually went really well! Not a lot can go wrong here – there’s no way to overcook or undercook them, so this just might be my niche!

Vegetable Summer Rolls with Peanut Sauce
    Ingredients
    • 3/4 cup natural-style creamy peanut butter
    • 1/3 cup water
    • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
    • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice (from about 1 1/2 medium limes)
    • 4 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce
    • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
    • 2 1/4 teaspoons chile-garlic paste
    • 1 medium garlic clove mashed to a paste
    • 1/2 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
    • 6 oz dried rice vermicelli
    • 12 round rice papers (8″ diameter)
    • 1 head butter or Boston Bibb lettuce, leaves separated
    • 1 cup julienned or shredded carrots
    • 1/2 cup julienned red bell peppers
    • fresh basil or Thai basil leaves
    Instructions
    1. For the sauce: Whisk the first eight ingredients (peanut butter through sesame oil) together in a medium bowl; set aside.
    2. For the summer rolls: Use a cake pan or pie dish and fill it with about 1″ of warm water. Dip one rice paper round in the dish for a few seconds. Lift the rice paper and let the water drip off. Place it on clean, dry work surface. Blot the top of the rice paper with a paper towel. Work one roll at a time.
    3. Top the wet rice paper with lettuce, vermicelli noodles, carrots, bell pepper, and basil leaves. Roll up the rice paper tightly, folding each side in before completing the roll. The wrapper is self-sealing. Use a sharp knife to cut the roll into slices. Repeat with each rice paper.

  • Faire Du Ski

    Faire Du Ski

Happy holidays everyone! I can’t even believe we’re nearing the end of 2013. Chris and I just returned from a week in Colorado where we visited with my family for Christmas, and even though I brought my snowboard with me, I decided to try skiing instead. It was so fun! I wedge-turned my way around Eldora Mountain Resort on the green trails where I actually first learned to snowboard. This was only my second time skiing – the first time was in 1993, so let’s just say that doesn’t count. I never fell once, and getting off the lift on skis is so. much. easier! While I don’t plan to abandon my board at all, I think I’ll spend a few weekends in 2014 practicing on skis.

  • Jeris & Michael – 10.13.13

    Jeris & Michael – 10.13.13

I’m pretty sure that when you’re planning a Virginia wedding in the month of October, you picture crisp, cool weather with the leaves turning beautiful colors and starting to fall from their trees. You might anticipate the ladies at your wedding needing a shawl or a wrap, and the gentlemen will easily be comfortable in suit jackets. What you probably don’t picture is five days straight of rain, rain, and more rain with no break and not a sliver of sunlight. But that’s what we encountered this past week! I nearly forgot what the sun looked like. And for Jeris & Michael’s wedding yesterday, the forecast predicted more of the wet stuff. Sure enough, it continued to rain all morning while I loaded up my gear and made my way out to Lost Creek Winery in Leesburg, VA. The drizzle insisted while I unpacked my car and while all of the vendors set up everything on the grounds around the Harvest House.

But somehow, miracle of all miracles, the rain completely stopped in the afternoon just in time for guests to arrive and be seated for the outdoor ceremony! The ceremony site was moved from the vines to the front of the house, and it could not have turned out more beautifully.

    SO stunning.09_cox-clagett_blog 10_cox-clagett_blog 11_cox-clagett_blog

Jeris’s dad seeing her for the first time was one of the sweetest moments I’ve ever witnessed. 13_cox-clagett_blog12_cox-clagett_blog 14_cox-clagett_blog 15_cox-clagett_blog 16_cox-clagett_blog 17_cox-clagett_blog 18_cox-clagett_blog 19_cox-clagett_blog 20_cox-clagett_blog

Despite the ground being pretty soggy, I was so excited that we were still able to do some photos in the vines! (Jeris had the super smart idea to bring cute boots for this very reason.)26_cox-clagett_blog 27_cox-clagett_blog28_cox-clagett_blog 29_cox-clagett_blog 30_cox-clagett_blog36_cox-clagett_blog

Just as the ceremony site was moved, the reception location was moved as well. The tent area was just completely soaked, so the Lost Creek staff and the amazing team from Bella Cosa Events worked incredibly hard to relocate the reception to the almost-completed carriage house next to the Harvest House. The results were simply stunning. 31_cox-clagett_blog32_cox-clagett_blog 33_cox-clagett_blog 34_cox-clagett_blog 35_cox-clagett_blog

Jeris and Mike had their first date at a Toby Keith concert, so they entered the reception and toasted with their guests to the song, “Red Solo Cup.” I adore personal touches like that! 37_cox-clagett_blog 38_cox-clagett_blog 39_cox-clagett_blog 40_cox-clagett_blog41_cox-clagett_blog 42_cox-clagett_blog 43_cox-clagett_blog 44_cox-clagett_blog 45_cox-clagett_blog

Jeris and Mike, it was absolutely wonderful meeting you both and I had such a great time photographing your wedding day! Your grace and relaxed attitudes about the crazy weather made the day even more special. I wish you both the very best!
