    Portraits in Washington, D.C.

For anyone who is new here (welcome!), I’ll start by explaining that I used to be a wedding and portrait photographer. Not too long ago, I had a very busy business for six years (before I decided to close that chapter), and one of my favorite parts about the job was the opportunity to explore the areas around me. I live in Northern Virginia just a hop, skip, and a jump outside of Washington, D.C.

Offering such a photogenic background, portrait sessions in D.C. were always in high demand and I found myself photographing couples in front of the city’s quintessential monuments and memorials on the regular. Those sessions inspired me to explore the city further outside of client work and I’ve made it a point to visit more often. I loved my photography business even though I had to let it go, so I thought it would be fun to reminisce by revisiting some of my favorite iconic D.C. portraits!

    Washington Monument

It doesn’t get much more iconic than the Washington Monument. At over 555 feet tall, the obelisk can easily be spotted from so many vantage points in the city and it showed up frequently in my photography.

    District of Columbia War Memorial

Tucked away in the foliage along Independence Avenue, the War Memorial is a little less traveled by the tourist crowd, so it made a perfect spot for images without a lot of people in the background.

    Thomas Jefferson Memorial

This is another one where we could often find a quiet spot among the columns for portraits, especially around the back of the building. The Jefferson also offers a beautiful view of the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument in the distance.

    Lincoln Memorial

I’m no longer up-to-date on the current photo permit requirements, but when I was doing weddings and portraits you were not allowed to photograph inside the Lincoln Memorial without a permit, and the security guards were very strict about it. If they saw a photographer carrying professional gear with a bride and groom in tow, they turned you away immediately! Every once in a while I was able to get away with a casual engagement portrait if we were discreet. But I’ll never forget taking this photo of Nick and Marjorie in front of the memorial (which is totally allowed) in the rain. It’s one of my absolute favorites.

    Capitol Building

My very first time doing an engagement session (eee! nerves!), I was photographing a couple who had access to the Russell Senate Office Building (Shawn worked there) and we were able to get a cool shot of the Capitol from inside, but there are so many other great spots in D.C. to photograph our Capitol.

    Cherry Blossoms

Last but not least, and while they aren’t technically a monument, I can’t write about my sessions in the District without mentioning the Cherry Blossoms. Spring is a magical time in the city and the blossoms were the perfect backdrop for magical photos!

  • Jessica & Nick – Engaged!

You know how I always talk about the weather in conjunction with my photo sessions? Maybe subconsciously I have a deep desire to be a meteorologist or something. Anyway, I’m going to do it again – I’m going to mention the weather. I simply can’t help it!

Jessi, Nick and I planned to meet up in D.C. for their engagement session on Saturday. The rain forecast said chance of thunderstorms 50%. We decided to give it a go, and sure enough right as our session was starting, the rain started, too. Thankfully, it only lasted for a few minutes and then the sky cleared up and we were treated to a beautiful evening! On my way home after the session ended, it started raining again. So our timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Oh, and did I mention? President Obama flew in through Dulles Airport that day, so the motorcade completely blocked off my route into D.C. and made me a few minutes late. I always leave extra time for traffic, but sometimes you just can’t predict this area. Nick and Jessi were so sweet and fun to photograph so I’m really glad it all worked out! We started off by taking a few photos by the Tidal Basin where they got engaged.

    Aren’t they so cute?!

Favorite! I’m so glad the crowd of people sitting at the end of this next shot decided to move. 🙂

Jessi and Nick, it was so nice to meet both of you and to get to know you a bit! Thank you so much for wandering around with me – you were awesome to photograph. I hope you have an amazing wedding back home, and best wishes for a long, happy marriage!

  • Megan & Kevin – Engaged!

What an incredibly sweet couple these two are! Megan and Kevin spent the evening with me in DC for their engagement photos several weeks ago. It was a super windy day! Luckily it didn’t rain, but we did have to contend with the huge gusts of wind most of the time. You wouldn’t know it though, from these photos! My hair looked crazy by the end of our session (no photos of that, thank you), but Megan and Kevin looked perfect the whole time! If I knew their secret, I’d tell you.

Megan & Kevin, thank you for braving the winds with me! I really enjoyed getting to know you both a little better, and I am so excited for your wedding in September! Hopefully we’ll have a nice, calm day or just a gentle breeze, if anything. 😉

  • Monika & Brad – Engaged!

Happy summer, everyone! I have an engagement session for you! I actually met up with Monika and Brad before it was even officially summer, but I am a tad behind in blogging my sessions. Can I blame it on the heat?! I’ve actually already photographed their wedding, too, so those images will be on the way soon. I promise!

We walked through the beautiful Meadowlark Gardens on a lovely day in May when it was still nice and cool outside. There may or may not have also been a spider-on-the-camera incident where Brad became the hero. I nearly flung my camera into the lake when I discovered a green (!) spider hanging out on the LCD (true story). Onto the images of Gorgeous Monika and Brad The Hero:

  • Alicia & Nick – Engaged!

Well, hello there! I almost don’t want to bring attention to the fact that I haven’t blogged in about three (!) months, but there’s just no getting around it. Chris and I took some much needed time off over the winter, and then I just never got back into the habit of blogging. Oops! Busted. In any case, I have an amazing couple to post about today, so I’ll get on with it! I met up with Alicia and Nick in DC last weekend for an absolutely gorgeous day, and we kicked off wedding season with my first engagement session of the year! Here are just a few of my favorite photos of this gorgeous gorgeous (yes, I meant to say it twice) couple:

    So sweet!

Talk about making my job super easy – these two were a breeze to photograph.

    Impromptu first dance practice:

Alicia’s sister, Lindsey, was along with us as well and pointed out this next shot. Thanks for the suggestion, Lindsey! It turned out to be one of my faves.

Alicia and Nick, thank you for spending your Sunday with me last weekend! I had so much fun photographing you both, and I’m even more excited for the wedding now! Side note: I totally did try the “prune” trick in the car on the way home. I don’t think I can pull off that look at all. 😉
