Hello friends! And a very Happy New Year to you! My 2013 started off with one of the worst colds I’ve had in a long time, but I am on the mend thankfully. I feel like I got that out of the way, and now the rest of the year is going to be amazing!

And with that, I have some news! In addition to the new blogsite layout, things are changing a bit here at SSP, and I want to share my thoughts with you.

Chris and I have been doing wedding photography for five years now. In some ways, I can’t believe it has gone by so quickly! And other times I think, five years – wow, it seems like a lot longer. We have met so many incredibly wonderful couples and have had some amazing adventures that could have only been experienced through our photography business. That time we photographed a wedding right in the middle of a huge blizzard. That time it rained (okay, this happened more than once). That time it was over 100 degrees (this definitely happened more than once). That time we photographed a beautiful wedding on New Year’s Eve and counted down to the new year with our wonderful couple’s friends and family. That time the officiant didn’t show up and the amazing wedding coordinator stepped in to perform the ceremony. That time we ate dinner in a tiny broom closet (a closet!). That time the venue was crawling with spiders everywhere I turned, but I stayed brave. That time we photographed a wedding in super cute and tiny Decorah, Iowa. That time we photographed a wedding in Hawaii!

So many clicks of the shutter, so many miles on the car. Checklist-checking, prepping the gear, packing the gear, carrying the gear. Driving, standing, walking, running. Directing, posing, staging, observing. Early mornings, late nights. Importing, exporting, backing up. Editing, editing, editing. Album designing, email answering, social media posting.

Oh and did I mention that we both have other full-time jobs? At one point I realized: I’m spending nearly all of my free time capturing other people’s memories instead of making more of my own. Yes, Chris and I were fortunate enough to have had some wonderful adventures here-and-there over the last five years – mainly our trips to Alaska, St. John, and Colorado. But when I look back at the amount of time that I was working vs. the amount of time I wasn’t working, it’s quite an imbalance. The typical workweek for most people  is designed with two days off (exception: parents!), but with two jobs and a never-ending-to-do list, I have been working seven days a week most weeks. The time commitment with weddings plus our other jobs leaves us with little to no free time and we miss our weekends, so…

We’ve decided to take a pause on offering full-scale weddings for a while.

Never say never, so I won’t say that we aren’t doing them at all, but we’re taking a much needed pause in order to simplify our lives a bit. I truly do LOVE weddings. Yes, it’s a lot (a lot a lot) of work, but there is something so special about The Big Day that always draws me back in. I’m truly honored when we’re chosen to share that day with someone and when we’re trusted to capture those important moments. So I personally will still be available for a few smaller weddings, and to second-shoot for fellow wedding photographers, and of course for portraits here and there, which I also love! Chris, however, is hanging up his BlackRapid double camera strap for the time being. He will still have a hand in the business though – he is my brilliant technical support.

Thank you to all of our fantastic couples from 2008-2012! We feel so very blessed to have crossed paths with you in such a special way.

    Lindsey & Brian – 10.06.12

I know it’s only the second week in October, but Lindsey and Brian’s wedding actually wraps up our 2012 wedding season! It just turned out that all of our fall weddings were right in a row, so we’re done a little early this year. And Lindsey and Brian’s wedding on Saturday was the perfect way to end a great year. Their ceremony was held at Memorial Chapel in College Park, MD on the beautiful University of Maryland campus. Chris and I weren’t sure what to expect because it was also a Maryland football game day! But we left early, traffic was no problem at all, and everything went super smoothly.

Lindsey got dressed at the chapel. So stunning.

Brian and his mom before the ceremony.

Lindsey and Brian decided to see each other before the ceremony and I love their first look pictures!

Brian, your reaction is the cutest thing ever.

    You two look a.ma.zing!

    So sweet.

    Such pretty fall colors!

The BWI Marriott was all decked out in beautiful autumn colors.

These fall-themed cookie favors looked delicious!

This one was already open as a cocktail hour decoration so I borrowed it.

This was such a cute idea! Guests inked up and put a thumbprint on this framed wedding tree.

    Fun entrance to the reception!

    Toasts.

    Sweet, sweet parent dances.

And then the party! Guess which song this is?!

Lindsey and Brian brought some really fun props for the photobooth…including a disco ball!

Lindsey and Brian, thank you so much for sharing your wedding day with Chris and me! You two are so incredibly fun and sweet, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know you. Best wishes for a happy life together!

  • Debbie & Stephen – 09.29.12

This past Saturday, I had the honor of photographing Debbie and Stephen’s wedding! As I mentioned before in their engagement session post, I know Debbie from high school, which was just a “few” years ago. 😉 I had been holding my breath all week because the weather forecast was predicting rain, but it ended up being an absolutely perfect day! I love this time of year.

    Debbie’s dad.

    And her mom.

    Gorgeous!

Stephen looks so cool and calm.

    Gooooooo team!

Um, how cute is this flower girl? She’s all, “Here is my dress, and here is my shoe!”

    Married!

We took a few post-ceremony photos near the church…

And then took a few more at Indigo Landing.

Debbie’s dad MADE this adorable sign for the reception.

Debbie and Stephen…or Fred and Ginger? Their first dance was beautifully choreographed.

And I love this idea – they put out a favor table, where guests could chose from various favors to take home.

“There’s always s’more love to go around” little s’mores kits.

    “Pop up some love tonight!”

A couple more BRHS alumni – go Spartans!

    Gangnam Style!

This is a first – there was a palm tree in the photobooth.

His sign reads, “Steve, I’ve always loved you!” Aw!

Looks like he got over it pretty quickly.

    Glow-stick exit!

Debbie – I’m glad we’ve kept in touch! It was really fun for me to get to witness and photograph your beautiful day. Stephen – it has been so nice to meet you! You have an amazing wife. 🙂 Chris and I wish you a lifetime of happiness together!

    Megan & Kevin – 09.22.12

Megan and Kevin’s wedding day was one of those days where the forecast called for some rain, maybe 40-50% chance, so we just didn’t know what to expect. But no one ever seemed anything but 100% joyful and excited, and the day went perfectly! I think maybe it rained while we were all tucked away in the church, witnessing a lovely ceremony, and then completely stopped for the rest of the day. I’m getting ahead of myself though – first of all, I photographed Megan getting ready at her parents’ house:

    This is Megan and Cashmere!

Puppies and flower girls, can it get any cuter?!

    Megan’s beautiful mom:

    The handsome groom, Kevin.

I can’t even tell you how much I love this photo of Megan and her dad in the limo on the way to the church.

    Proofreading the program:

The rain held off during portraits, and gave us a beautiful, dramatic sky!

Oh my gosh, STUNNING, you two:

    Favorite!

Their reception was held at the beautiful Catoctin Hall at Musket Ridge.

I love all the personal touches with monograms and initials!

First dance as Mr. & Mrs.

    Sweet, proud parents.

High-fives for the flower girls for a job well done.

How about a sunset photo to wrap up this post?

Megan & Kevin, it was an absolute pleasure to work with you both! And it was wonderful to meet your families – thank you so much for your warmth and hospitality. We felt like guests with cameras, and had such a great time photographing your day. We wish you both all the best!

  • Alicia & Nick – 09.15.12

I know it’s been a month or two since my last post, but I have a really good one for you to kick off the fall wedding season! Alicia and Nick (super adorable) were married at The Lodges at Gettysburg on one of the most gorgeous days we’ve had this year. There were tons and tons of beautiful details in this wedding (you’re not even going to believe it, but a lot of it is DIY), and we had so much fun shooting them! Alicia is Abby’s sister, of Abby and Brandon, so it was really nice to see their family again and to meet Nick’s family! Let’s get on with the photos, shall we?

Check out the antique car…more on that later!

Yeah, so I’m a little obsessed with this bouquet from Weddings and Blooms, so you’ll just have to forgive me for posting multiple photos!

I love this photo that Chris captured of Nick before the ceremony.

    And this one! Cool silhouette.

Alicia’s dad drove her to the ceremony site in this 1915 antique Ford Model T.

    Look at that sky!

    Favorite!

We loved everything about The Lodges. What a beautiful venue and location!

Okay, ready to swoon over some reception details?

I loved all the different floral centerpieces.

The magic table of cookies that just kept getting refilled. Alicia’s mom and aunts baked hundreds and hundreds of cookies for the wedding! I can’t even imagine how much work that was. I can, however, attest to how delicious they were. Everyone kept insisting that Chris and I take cookies home, so we certainly did. (My arm doesn’t have to be twisted that far when it comes to cookies.) It made the ride home so fun and yummy!

I always always love Chris’s captures of the first dance, and I especially love this one! And you can get a good look at the back of Alicia’s pretty up-do.

This was one of our favorite parts of the evening – the bridal dance (or “Redovy”) tradition. All the guests at the reception line up for a last chance to dance with the bride. It is customary to donate money to the newly wed couple for the privilege of the dance. The money is put into an apron, basket, plate, or decorated box before dancing with the bride. The starosta (master of ceremonies) keeps the line moving, allowing only a few turns before cutting in for the next guest’s chance to dance and share with the bride their good wishes before she and the groom begin their new life. After each guest dances with the bride, they may receive a drink and a piece of the freshly cut wedding cake or pastry.

Hey, there’s Abby and Brandon, who are expecting a new little addition to their family soon – congratulations you two!

Alicia and Nick brought small chalkboard signs for their guests. This “We heart Gma” sign is the cutest!

When I was going through the photobooth images, this one made me laugh! I love the creative use of negative space here:

And this was literally my last frame of the night – perfect ending to a perfect day!

Alicia and Nick – it was so wonderful to see you again! Thank you for inviting Chris and I to be a part of your wedding day – we really enjoyed capturing all of these wonderful moments, and we loved spending this time with you. We wish you both the very best.
