    Scotland 2018 Snapshot

And now it’s time for my Scotland snapshot post! I’ve rounded up some of the highlights (and one lowlight) and random moments from our trip to Glasgow and Speyside this past summer.

    Trip Details

Chris and I flew Iceland air round-trip from IAD – GLA on July 3rd through the 9th. We stayed one night at the Radisson Blu Glasgow before taking a rental car up to Speyside for three nights. We stayed at The Station Hotel in Rothes, and then returned to Glasgow for one night (and stayed at the Radisson Blu again) to attend TRNSMT Fest.

    Wish List

This is a new section of the snapshot posts! I usually make a little wish list before each trip of extra things I try to make sure we eat, see, or do outside of our main activities, and I thought it would be fun to share the list in this post.

    • photograph the Craigellachie bridge (drone photo)
    • eat shortbread & go to the Walkers shop
    • have afternoon tea
    • eat sticky toffee pudding
    • eat at The Mash Tun (haggis nachos!)
    • see Balvenie Castle
    • see/photograph highland cows
    • go to the top of the Lighthouse for views of Glasgow

We managed to do all of the Speyside items on my list except afternoon tea – it just didn’t end up fitting into our schedule. I also didn’t take a drone photo of the Craigellachie bridge since there were always people around and I didn’t want to disturb anyone, but we did take non-aerial photos of it. And then the one thing I wanted to do in Glasgow, go to the top of the Lighthouse, ended up being closed. Boo. But seeing highland cows again was really at the top of my list and I did get to do that, so yay!

    Best Moment

Chris’s favorite moment was the Balvenie tasting. My favorite moment was a tie between playing with the highland cows and dancing to The Killers at TRNSMT Fest. But despite our wildly different highlights, we always manage to have a great time together. 🙂

    Worst Moment

I’m a pretty big rule-follower and people-pleaser AND I really try hard to represent Americans well when we travel, so I felt pretty sheepish when I was chased away from Balvenie Castle for flying my drone there. I really didn’t think I was disturbing anyone since there were no visitors, but there is a private residence fairly close to the castle so I imagine they don’t want a drone overhead. I wasn’t filming the residence at all and didn’t even fly over it, but I understand. Womp womp. Hopefully my photo isn’t plastered anywhere with “Bad American” written on it. I did get a pretty photo at least (see Favorite Photos below).

    Funniest Moment

There was a very enthusiastic (tipsy and/or high?) Scottish woman at TRNSMT Fest who put her arm around my waist a few times to dance with me during The Killers. She also kept grabbing our arms to joyfully pump them in the air to the music. Neither of us are used to a stranger entering our personal space like that! Chris was a little traumatized by it, but I found her fun and hilarious. And I thought I videoed a bit of us dancing, but my iPhone lens must have been switched to the wrong side. All I have is this blurry snapshot showing half of her face:

    Best Meal

We loved our Mexican small plates dinner at Topolabamba in Glasgow (that was Chris’s favorite meal), but the best thing I ate was the sticky toffee pudding at The Station Hotel restaurant, Toots. We ended up eating it more than once and I don’t even feel bad about it. That little cup of toffee sauce is liquid joy.

    Something We Learned

We learned all about the cooper’s job in the whisky making process. I had no idea that the bourbon and sherry casks used for the aging stage were disassembled, modified, and reassembled before using them to age the whisky. It was fascinating to watch them at work.

    We’re Thankful We Packed

Light. We needed plenty of room in our suitcases on the way back to bring home several souvenir bottles of whisky, so it was good that we packed as few things as possible.

Pro tip: I always pack one of these packable totes in my suitcase in case I need the extra space for carrying souvenirs home. In this situation, I put some stuff from my suitcase into the tote as a carry-on so that we could put whisky bottles (liquids) in the suitcase as checked baggage.

    We Didn’t Need To Bring

Rain gear! We had amazing weather the entire time and never needed our rain jackets.

    Trip Regrets

I wish we could have squeezed in a few more days to see more of the Scottish countryside.

    Reasons To Go Back

We always want to go back to Scotland! No specific reasons needed, but we do have Isle of Skye, Campbeltown, and the highlands on our short list.

In addition to all of the photos from Speyside and Glasgow, I also put together a short little video of our trip. It was my second time filming video footage with the DJI Mavic Pro! (Other clips are from the GoPro and my point-and-shoot.) Hope you like it!

  • Food, Fun, and Festivals in Glasgow

Food, Fun, and Festivals in Glasgow

Chris and I are huge fans of The Killers and CHVRCHES, so when we found out that both bands were playing at TRNSMT Fest in Glasgow, Scotland, we immediately set our calendar reminders to buy tickets as soon as they went on sale. Chris had also been itching to visit Speyside, so we decided to extend our July 4th holiday into an extra long weekend in order to cover the festival and the whisky trail.

On the eve of July 3rd, we hopped on an overnight Icelandair flight to Glasgow and found ourselves celebrating Independence Day the next morning in the United Kingdom. A bit ironic perhaps, but we couldn’t think of a better way to spend our holiday!

We stayed at the Radisson Blu Glasgow, just steps away from Glasgow Central Station and one block from the car rental office where we planned to pick up a car the next day for a road trip to Speyside. Our room was super clean, comfy, and convenient!

In an effort to beat jet lag and make the most out of our first of two days in the city, we set out on foot after getting checked in to explore and to find some lunch. Glasgow is quite walkable, and we had an incredibly gorgeous summer day to enjoy a sleep-deprived stroll.

I suppose it’s somewhat cliché, but as soon as we touch down in the U.K. I always instantly crave fish and chips, so we stopped into The Butterfly and the Pig for the traditional dish. And when I say we stopped in, I mean first we accidentally seated ourselves in the tea room upstairs before realizing the full restaurant was downstairs. Oops. It was worth the minor embarrassment though –  our delicious meals hit the spot. This was actually my first time trying mushy peas and I loved them! How did I miss this comforting side dish the first three visits to the U.K.?

Operating on no sleep from the previous night, we decided to give in to a bit of laziness and booked tickets on an open-top bus tour. We’ve done these bus tours a couple of times in different cities and it’s such a great way to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Our guide, Peter, kept us perked up with hilarious and informative commentary.

We were treated to some of Glasgow’s most beautiful sites including Glasgow University, George Square, and Glasgow Cathedral. Sometimes we use the hop-on-hop-off bus as transportation to reach the major sites, doing the hopping on and hopping off thing, but this time we just stayed on the bus, enjoyed the fresh air, and listened to the guided tour since we were short on time and energy.

One of our quirky travel traditions is eating Mexican or Tex-Mex food in every country we can find it (once we’ve already covered the local cuisine as much as possible), so we continued the tradition at Topolabamba for dinner. We indulged in various margaritas and street food small plates, and we would definitely eat there again if/when we get to return to Glasgow!

Our Mexican dinner (promptly followed by passing out at our hotel) wrapped up our first day in Glasgow. The next morning we walked down the street to pick up our rental car and set out on a road trip to Speyside. We spent three days wandering the whisky trail and tasting Speyside’s finest, and then we returned to Glasgow for TRNSMT Fest. A Speyside whisky adventures post is up next, but first a few images from our time at the festival!

Oddly enough despite our love for live music, this was our first time attending a big music festival, so we didn’t really know what to expect except maybe large crowds and pricey drinks. I’m not a huge fan of crowded places (an understatement) so we purposely didn’t show up as soon as the gates were open and although TRNSMT is a multi-day event, I only purchased one-day tickets for the same reason. Spoiler alert: we had tons of fun! But one day was plenty.

We rolled into Glasgow Green mid-afternoon knowing that our favorite bands would take the stage later in the evening. In the image below, the red arrow points to our spot for the night after wandering the grounds and grabbing drinks and snacks. It was fairly unobstructed with a good view of the stage!

Franz Ferdinand played a really great set to an energetic audience, and then the crowd seemed oddly mild-mannered for CHVRCHES, but when The Killers took the stage everyone went bonkers. I’ve never seen so much energy at a show. With nary a spare inch of personal space (eek!), we were literally swept up in the movement and excitement of the people surrounding us. People chanted and danced and sang every word at full steam. Several times a very joyful Scottish woman grabbed both Chris and me by the arms and pumped our limbs into the air with hers. I was laughing so hard and enjoying myself that I overcame any anxiety about the crowd level, and we had a great time!

The festival went off without a hitch as far as I could tell. Drink lines moved swiftly, security at every gate eased my mind, and since Chris and I opted for VIP tickets we were treated to the upgraded restroom situation, a very nice perk.

So as far as music festivals go, I couldn’t think of a better place to experience my first one! The people of Glasgow sure know how to party. I’m glad we decided to put the rest of our trip before the concert. The next day we returned home to the States exhausted and happy from our quick jaunt to Scotland and we already can’t wait to return.

Up next: our three days in the Speyside area in which we managed to visit eight whisky distilleries!

  • Photo Friday – Best Band Ever

This week’s photo is from the Depeche Mode concert last year at Jiffy Lube Live, and I’m posting it because I have concerts on the brain! Or rather lack-of-concerts – usually Chris and I see at least two or three concerts a year, but for some reason this year we don’t have anything scheduled yet. Actually, Chris got to see Imagine Dragons a few weeks ago at a conference for work and I’m so jealous. Of course I’d love to see Depeche Mode again, but I’d also be excited to see Angels and Airwaves, Chvrches, or The Killers (always a favorite). Chris is also waiting for Chevelle to go back on tour, so I’m putting it out there hoping The Universe will make it happen. It’s summer concert time!

  • 2013 in Review

Happy New Year! *confetti* I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are enjoying a peaceful start to the new year. I’m so excited for what’s coming up in 2014, but I also love to look back on the year behind and reflect on the highlights:

Snowboarding at Snowshoe, WV · Completing my Invisalign treatment (official photo from the orthodontist’s office!) · Celebrating the birth of Coelle’s baby girl · Photographing a few lovely weddings and getting a photo published in the Washington Post · Taking a guitar class · Traveling to breathtaking Tortola and Virgin Gorda · Meeting up with Casey in Orlando, FL to visit Universal/The Wizarding World of Harry Potter · Seeing awesome concerts including The Killers and Depeche Mode · Starting my yoga practice · Traveling to Puerto Rico and hiking in El Yunque · Cheering on the Caps at several games · Working on house projects including a bathroom mini-makeover · Visiting my family in Colorado and skiing for the first time in 20 years!

    2013_highlights

Not pictured are the lowlights of 2013 – wouldn’t that be a weird collage? It would include minor snowboarding injuries, Chris’s broken hand from softball, and my jaw surgery where one side of my face puffed up to the size of a grapefruit. But I’d always rather focus on the positives!

Chris and I have some really amazing plans for 2014 including learning to scuba dive (eep!), traveling to West Virginia, Grand Cayman, Iceland, and Colorado, and some house projects to keep us busy in between trips. I can’t wait to share some photos, and to hear about your own adventures! Hope your year is happy, healthy, and everything else you want it to be. 🙂
