  • Frenchies!

I have a few really random things to post – photos that I took in the past year and just never blogged because of various excuses. So I’m going to play catch up over the winter months!

A few years ago, I photographed my friend Coelle’s new French Bulldog, Zoey. I even puppy-sat for her! She also showed up for Coelle and Corey’s engagement photos. And then in 2010 I photographed Zoey’s new little sister, Macey, though I don’t think I blogged an image of her. Here are the two sisters, Zoey and Macey, respectively:

And then this summer, Coelle’s parents welcomed a new little Frenchie into their home as well! This is Bria. She’s like, “Whaaaaaa?! Another Frenchie?” Yes! Another one. I am the official photographer of French Bulldogs. If that’s not a very specific niche, I don’t know what is.

Aren’t they all so cute? I could photograph those sweet adorable little smoosh-faces and big ears all day. So if anyone ever happens to need a photographer with a lot of French Bulldog experience, that’s me!

  • Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

    Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

If you travel to Alaska but don’t happen to spot a bear or a moose in the wild, just stop by the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) in Girdwood for an opportunity to view these beautiful animals up close. AWCC takes in injured and orphaned animals and cares for them, and if an animal cannot be released into the wild post-treatment, they remain at the center as their permanent home. (That said, keep in mind that some animals might not be “on display” at certain points of the year – it’s not the same as a zoo.) The animals roam freely in large enclosures where you can easily view them and their natural behaviors. Some animals even get up pretty close!

Several different species inhabit the center at any given time, including moose, elk, caribou, bald eagles, oxes, bison, and bears, both black and brown. We saw most of these animals, but I became obsessed with the expressive brown bears. Chris and I rented a 400mm f/5.6L lens for the trip, and it was almost too long for photographing the animals because we were so close! So it’s a great opportunity for everyone with all types of cameras to get National Geographic-style wildlife shots. You can focus your camera lens through the fence to get an unobstructed shot, and go home with some impressive wildlife photos to show off! Admission was $12.50 each, and we spent about an hour walking around and taking photos. There is a visitor center with facilities, gifts and snacks, where we purchased a couple of waters. The walkways are natural, dusty paths, so be prepared with appropriate footwear.

Most of these images were taken with an SLR, but some were with the point-and-shoot. I’ve included a few shots of the fencing so you get a feel for the enclosures and what to expect. Like I mentioned, it’s not a fancy zoo – it’s a conservation effort meant to keep with the natural feel of the wild. We ended up at the center midday and it was warm and sunny, but also contrasty lighting. I’d recommend going a little earlier in the day for better lighting and maybe more activity from the animals. When we visited many of the animals were happily resting, but some were also active and playful. Either way, we enjoyed it!

  • Stay Tuned…

Okay, so I admit I have been a bit of a slacker when it comes to blogging the past several weeks. I have been catching up on editing, album designing, and planning for 2011. I also even did a little much-needed resting and visiting with family over the holidays. But now it’s back to business once again! And even though this is sort of my “off season” for shooting weddings, I am still working: bookkeeping, portfolio updating, planning, and still more album designing. But what to post on the blog if I’m not shooting as much? In the tiny bit of free time I hope to have, I’ll be working on a few non-photography related projects (our house is in dire need of some TLC) and I plan to share those things here! I also have a few things in the to-blog backlog. So if you’re here because you’re a long-time blog reader, THANK YOU for sticking in there even though I didn’t have fresh content for six weeks straight. (Hanging my head in shame.) Stay tuned – I promise I will at least have a few personal posts up here and there over the winter. And if you’re a prospective client, please do peek through the archives for my most recent work a few weeks back!

And in the name of having a little visual content for a blog post, how about a random image that has nothing to do with this post. It’s my new nephew, Andy! He’s a baby Weimaraner (5 months old here). I got to meet him while visiting my family in Colorado over Thanksgiving:

  • Family Photo Attempt

Last weekend I met up with Jenn and Stephen to attempt to take a quick family picture with their two kitties. I say attempt, because the kitties didn’t end up being very cooperative. It turns out that because they don’t really like each other, they don’t really want to be in a group photo either. So rather then force them and end up with tons of scratches, we took a few pictures of just the human part of the family instead:

Jenn and Stephen just recently celebrated their one-year anniversary, and this was Stephen’s anniversary gift to Jenn. (Nice job, Stephen!)

And we couldn’t leave Max and Boney out of the photo session completely! We took a few individual pictures. Here is Mr. Max looking rather peeved still. And I don’t think he likes his outfit:

And here is Boney, who doesn’t love the camera but I managed to sneak this one in anyway:

For the record, I adore all animals and am super patient with them! I’ve had some successful people + pet photos in the past, including pictures of just Jenn and Max, but this was my first try with two cats that don’t get along really well and don’t want their picture taken. I guess you can win ’em all. 🙂

  • Coelle & Corey – Engaged!

Oh gosh, what can I even say about Coelle and Corey without getting uber sappy? Coelle is a very very dear friend of mine from high school. I moved to Virginia my senior year of high school, and Coelle was the first person on the first day to make me feel welcome at my new school. We clicked immediately and were inseparable from then on. I’m super happy that she and Corey found each other, and the two of them make the cutest pair. I think I sort of demanded that I shoot their wedding (you know, in a nice way) and thus their engagement photos as well, so we met this afternoon for the engagement session!

We started off by walking their dog, Zoey, around their cute little town center.

    Whatcha lookin’ at, Zoey?

Okay, not the best angle on Zoey, but I love the silhouette!

Here’s a better one of Zoey!

Are these two so cute or what?

Okay, one last one of the pup before we dropped her off at home…

Corey is a volunteer firefighter, so we stopped by the station to get a couple of pictures with the engine (Corey knows I love shooting there).

    Um, Coelle? You’re gorgeous!

Corey suggested this beautiful little nook in their neighborhood and we finished up the session there.

What did I tell you?! Goooooorgeous!

    So CUTE, you guys!

Coelle and Corey, I’m so gosh darn happy for you two. You KNOW I can’t wait for your wedding! Eee!
