  • Kara & Ernie – 08.29.09

Back in August I took a lovely scenic drive up to Maryland to help Kate Triano photograph Kara and Ernie’s wedding at the Grand Lodge. After you’re done here, you should stop by Kate’s blog to see her fabulous images of the day. In the meantime, want to see a few of my own random favorites from the day? Yeah? Here you go!

I spent a few minutes with Ernie before we headed over to the ceremony. Look how excited he is to be getting married!

The details of their day were exquisite, including this bouquet. Check out the peacock feathers!

And speaking of exquisite, how gorgeous is Kara?!

Kara’s wedding ring was a family heirloom (and Ernie’s, too, if I’m not mistaken), and here they are showing the ring to Ernie’s grandmother:

    Speaking of rings…

    Gorgeous light, gorgeous couple!

Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to spend some time showing you those grandfabulous* (yep, I just made up that word…) details, okay?

    Elegant first dance:

    After the cake-cutting/feeding, I love how they’re both all “hands-off…no face-smooshing.”

*I actually Googled “grandfabulous” to see if it was anyone else’s made-up word (and because I’m just that much of a dork), and it does show up a few times in Google. BUT, it’s not defined at urbandictionary.com yet, so maybe the entry can be updated as a word to describe Kara and Ernie’s reception details!

  • Marjorie & Nick – 10.17.09

If rain on your wedding day really is good luck, Marjorie and Nick are set for life. Seriously. I hope they play the lottery soon, because there sure was a lot of luck showered on them on Saturday! I have to highlight the fact, though, that neither of them ever complained about it once. Marjorie, Nick and their guests were all smiles all day, which made my job fun despite the disappointing weather! When I arrived to take a few getting ready pictures, Marjorie was calm and excited all at once, if that makes any sense.

Thank goodness for this beautiful window-lit hallway in the back of Holy Trinity church since we weren’t able to do any portraits outside. (P.S. Marjorie, you’re stunning!)

The ring bearer “pillow” made of flowers (button mums I think?) was so pretty:

Chris captured Marjorie’s entrance – if you look closely you can see streaks of raindrops!

Another one of Chris’s fantastic ceremony captures:

We braved the weather for a few quick photos at the Lincoln Memorial. And see I told you, no one was bothered by the rain and cold at all!

Once we all arrived at Tregaron for the reception, we took a few more fun pictures.

This might be my most favorite family portrait EVER:

Tregaron was so charming and cozy. Perfect! This is the smaller of the two dining rooms:

Marjorie created the design for all of the paper elements including the invitations and this menu card.

There was no shortage of sweet stuff at this wedding, and it started with the escort cards/favors that contained maple candies for each guest. Another DIY detail if I’m not mistaken!

I got to try one of these Georgetown Cupcakes and I have to tell you, I’m now a huge fan – I think this was a really fun (and portable) wedding cake alternative. It made my drive home all the more enjoyable. 🙂

More sugary treats courtesy of a candy bar:

Which everyone of all ages enjoyed!

My view of the first dance:

    Chris’s view:

Marjorie’s cousin called from Afghanistan, where he is currently on tour, to wish Nick and Marjorie a happy wedding day!

Thanks to our vantage points during the toasts, Chris and I were able to capture a photo of nearly every guest at the wedding. I love the “Where’s Waldo” feel of these.

Best wishes and congratulations, Marjorie and Nick! Your wedding turned out absolutely perfect, and I’ll never forget how cheerful you both were in spite of the weather. It was truly a wonderful event to witness, and Chris and I were happy to be a part of your day!

  • Photographic Evidence

I have photographic evidence to present to you, blog readers, that even a very chilly, rainy day can turn out to be absolutely beautiful. First a photo of Marjorie and Nick who were married yesterday on a day that had no break whatsoever in the rainy weather we have been having in the DC area. Please allow Exhibit A to demonstrate how genuinely happy these two are as newlyweds (just look at those smiles!) despite the cold and dreary weather.

And please allow Exhibit B to show just how soggy fall in DC really was yesterday, but that the colors of the leaves here are magnificent even in the rain and mud:

More from Marjorie and Nick’s wedding coming soon!

  • Camilla & John – 10.2.09

I love it when Chris and I feel like wedding guests who just happen to be taking the pictures, and Camilla and John are both such warm hosts so that’s exactly how we felt at their wedding last night! They are both just so sweet, and have such fun friends. We had a cool, cloudy day, which was 100x better than the rain that was forecast for the afternoon/evening. I spent just a few minutes with Camilla before we headed over to the church. She’s a girl after my own heart because she had two pairs of shoes to choose from – I can’t decide on stuff like that either. I love the ones she went with, though!

They went perfectly with her gorgeous dress.

Matron of honor helping out with the last few details.

Meanwhile, Chris was back at the church hanging out with the guys. Here John is clearly getting some crucial advice from one of the groomsmen. Or they’re talking about random guy stuff, I have no idea.

The ceremony took place at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Reston. Don’t the stained glass windows add such a great pop of color?

Camilla and John chose to see each other before the ceremony, which I LOVE for so many reasons. We were able to get all of the group portraits done before the ceremony started. Bonus!

I love this perfect shot that Chris captured – Camilla looks so beautiful and so excited!

Good-looking bridal party? Um, yeah! Gorgeous!

Chris was working these beautiful close-up shots:

We did do all of the pictures before the ceremony, but I couldn’t resist taking Camilla and John out into Reston Town Center for a few more. Here’s my view…

    And here’s Chris’s view!

The reception was held in one of the beautiful ballrooms at the Hyatt Regency in Reston.

I couldn’t decide which of Chris’s first dance pictures I liked better, so I’m showing you both!

The amazing band, Round Midnight, kept the dance floor totally packed, and I mean PACKED. I had to get out my wide-angle lens and hop up on the stage to get a good shot of this crowd.

You know it’s a good party when someone ends up with a necktie around his head.

Martha, one of the uber-talented singers, was out on the dance floor singing to this cutie to get him into the music…

And this was his response (hilarious):

    Bridesmaids!

There were so many hands up in the air for “(You know you make me wanna) Shout!”

Camilla and John, best wishes and congratulations to you both! Chris and I could not have been more honored to document your wedding. We really did have a wonderful time!

  • Indigo Landing

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of photographing the SESMA Savor a Sunset reception at Indigo Landing in Alexandria, and I just want to post a few photos to show off this fantastic space for events. You might recognize it from Kim and Blaise’s wedding this past August! The warm and cozy environment inside has access to a roomy deck with a beautiful view of the Potomac. The combination provided the perfect space and flow for conversation and mingling. Guests were treated to cocktails and some of the most beautifully presented hors d’oeuvres. Indigo Landing’s staff couldn’t be more sweet and gracious, and I had a wonderful time hanging out with them. Enjoy the photos!
